Molecular Pathology Workshop

Molecular Pathology Workshop is a laboratory based course for fellows arriving at the NIH. This multi-week workshop addresses common experiments and theories in molecular biology. The course can be adjusted to the needs and level of experience of each trainee. During their transition from didactic graduate course work and clinically oriented backgrounds in veterinary medicine and pathology, trainees receive hands-on laboratory bench experience applicable to molecular diagnostics and their dissertation research.

Experiments may include:

  • Procurement of Tissues for Molecular Analysis
  • Genomic DNA Isolation from Tissue
  • Spectrophotometry
  • Polymerase Chain Reaction
  • Agarose Gel Electrophoresis
  • DNA Isolation from Agarose Gels
  • Subcloning
  • Plasmid DNA Isolation
  • Restriction Enzyme Digestion
  • RNA Isolation from Tissues
  • cDNA Synthesis
  • Real Time PCR
  • Cell Culture
  • Cytospin Preparation
  • Protein Lysate Preparation
  • BCA Protein Assay
  • SDS-PAGE Gel Electrophoresis
  • Coomassie Blue Protein Gel Staining
  • Western Blotting
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Digital Slide Scanning and Image Analysis
  • Laser Capture Microdissection
