CBSTP Program Synopsis

The CBSTP offers multiple pathways to combine focused clinical specialization with biomedical research training for doctors of veterinary medicine.  Launched in 2003, the CBSTP provides combined training in pathology and research, leading to a Ph.D., and now expanded opportunities for obtaining clinical specialization leading to certification in a variety of veterinary specialties, including veterinary pathology. This training is designed to create scientific investigators from a variety of veterinary disciplines who are able to translate research findings with a comparative perspective from patient diseases and animal models to the clinical setting.  Following initial graduate training at one of our university partners, trainees transfer to an intramural research laboratory within the NCINHLBINIAID or NINDS, for additional training in translational research as a clinician-scientist.  Thus, graduates of the program have unique comparative insight into basic and translational discovery science, and clinical research, through experiences fusing veterinary clinical expertise with basic biomedical research devoted to human disease problems.

Our legacy pathology track training initiative provides for multidisciplinary training in veterinary diagnostics, animal pathophysiology, comparative pathology, human pathology, molecular biology, and medical research.

Support includes attractive stipend, tuition support, health insurance benefits, and other training assistance. Candidate veterinarians must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents and have less than five years postdoctoral experience.

New tracks embracing additional veterinary specialties are now open for recruitment.
